12 High-Protein Lebanese Foods You Already Love

By Chef Mahaba5 min read

You do not need imported protein bars — teta's kitchen was high-protein before it was a hashtag. Here are 12 Lebanese classics that feed your muscles as well as your soul.

Waraa enab with meat — a traditional high-protein Lebanese dish cooked at home

Somewhere between the protein-shake aisle and the imported chicken-breast containers, we forgot something: the traditional Lebanese table has always been rich in protein. Meat-stuffed vegetables, slow-cooked legumes, grilled fish, strained yogurt — this is food that fed generations of people doing hard physical work. Here are twelve classics that prove it.

The meat classics

Waraa enab bil lahme — vine leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat — is protein wrapped in tradition, and one of the most requested dishes on our rotation. Shish barak delivers meat dumplings in protein-rich yogurt sauce, a double hit in one bowl. Freekeh bil lahme pairs smoky green wheat, itself unusually high in protein for a grain, with tender chunks of meat. And mahshi koussa and malfouf — stuffed zucchini and cabbage rolls — carry a meat-and-rice filling that makes vegetables do protein work.

Poultry and red meat, done the home way

A properly grilled steak with vegetables, moghrabieh with chicken where the semolina pearls soak up rich broth around generous pieces of poultry, and kafta — minced meat with parsley and onion, grilled or baked with potatoes — are weeknight staples of the Lebanese home kitchen that happen to be exactly what a training plan asks for.

From the sea

Fish fillet with rice — whether in red sauce or with tajen-style tahini — has always been the coastal Lebanese answer to a light, protein-forward dinner. Shrimp dishes like orzo with shrimp bring seafood protein with Mediterranean comfort.

Plant-powered and dairy

Adas — lentils in soup or mujadara — is the protein backbone of the Lebanese pantry, cheap and generous. Hummus and balila make chickpeas a daily protein habit. And labneh, the strained yogurt that opens every Lebanese breakfast, is quietly one of the highest-protein things on the table.

Eat them without cooking them

Most of these dishes live on Mahabati's rotating menu of more than 177 plates, cooked fresh every morning by Chef Mahaba and delivered across Beirut, Jounieh, Keserwan and beyond.
